The American Cancer Society (ACS) is committed to eliminating and preventing cancer through an extremely broad spectrum of initiatives. A recent commentary by American Cancer Society researchers looked at cancer dangers from an unusual source: climate change.

This commentary appeared in the May 18 issue of the ACS journal CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians. To make their case, the researchers cited examples such as 2017’s Hurricane Harvey, which flooded Houston oil refineries and chemical facilities to release carcinogenic substances into the environment.

After examining a number of alarming travesties, the article concluded that climate change is a very real threat to effective cancer prevention and treatment. In addition to advocating for the fight against climate change in all its forms, the authors suggest that cancer treatment centers prioritize disaster preparedness as a chief concern.
